Timo Okkonen – Bio

Timo founded Kind Atom in 2022 after being strongly encouraged by professionals working together with him on challenging projects. He acts as the program advisor supporting customers in their program and project execution.

Since 2021, Timo has been engaged by Fermi Energia as their program advisor, responsible for proactive planning over the investment life cycle, evaluation of candidate technologies, and a financially oriented analysis of business risks.

Before Kind Atom, Timo founded a new digital consulting company called Kind Shark, where he is responsible for strategic advisory to customers. Kind Shark has already supported nuclear organizations, among others, in digitizing their operations.

Timo is also a board member at Platom, a technical engineering and consultation company directed to nuclear customers in Finland and abroad. Timo enjoys bringing the experience to life by helping the company and its leaders to grow.

Timo has an MSc degree in engineering physics (1990) and a DrTech degree in nuclear safety (1998). He was born in 1965, lives in Helsinki, and has a spouse and a young boy, as well as a daughter and two grown-up boys from a previous relationship.

Timo’s sport passion is playing single in tennis, and he also likes gym, swimming, cross-country skiing and playing ice hockey.

 

Career and experience

Timo (LinkedIn) carries over 35 years of experience in the nuclear branch, first in expert (10 years) and then in management positions (25 years). He understands the perspectives of different key parties after leading challenging projects and operations in regulatory, supplier, research, inspection and owner’s organizations:

  • Turnaround of a challenging green-field project after several years of stagnation, leading to direct real progress in engineering, licensing and project management (COO, interim-CEO and executive advisor, Fennovoima, 2018-2021);

  • Growth of inspection businesses with industrial customers, 1600 experts in nine countries, as well as mergers and acquisitions financed by private equity investors (several positions including COO and CEO, Inspecta, 2005-2017);

  • Leading regulatory oversight of industries ranging from energy production to oil, gas and chemicals, pulp and paper, mining, engineering and manufacturing, electrical and fire safety installations, elevators and cranes (director, TUKES, 2003-2005);

  • Development of regulations and regulatory practices for new nuclear power plant designs and green-field projects including Olkiluoto 3 project start (head of project office, STUK, 2001-2003; inspector, STUK, 1987-1993);

  • Setting up a new direction for the Finnish nuclear safety research program in cooperation with the ministry, research organizations and nuclear industry (program chair, STUK, 2002-2003);

  • Engineering and licensing of new programmable technology including plant-wide modernization of I&C and electrical systems in a BWR (analysis group leader and lead engineer on safety, Westinghouse Atom, 1996-2001);

  • Conducting research for DrTech (PhD) degree on severe accidents (KTH, 1993-1996) and applying this for a new BWR containment design (ABB Atom, 1996-1997);

  • Performing accident analyses on BWRs and PWRs to support regulatory decision making and evaluation of proposed technologies (STUK, 1987-1993).
